20151216: 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan packs a punch

  • "The Volkswagen Tiguan SUV kicks off the 2016 model year with a new starting price that reduces entry to the lineup by nearly $1,400. Updates and enhancements include streamlined trim-level offerings. Now available in S, R-Line, SE, and SEL trim levels, new standard features include V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces, heated seats and Keyless access with push-button start.

This year, the Tiguan R-Line is repositioned to a lower price point between the S and SE trims to make the sporty and aggressive styling even more accessible. With the reordered trim level offerings more standard content has been added. The entry-level S trim line adds MIB II infotainment systems with five-inch touch screen and USB, keyless access with push-button start, V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces, heated front seats, heated washer nozzles and automatic headlights with rain-sensing wipers and auto-dimming mirror.

R-Line and higher trim lines add MIB II infotainment with a 6.3-inch touch screen, and VW Car-Net App-Connect. A panoramic sunroof is now standard on the SE, along with 18-inch New York aluminum-alloy wheels; Bi-Xenon headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights and the Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS); LED rear license plate lights; fog lights with cornering function; full power driver’s seat; power passenger seat recline; and chrome interior switches, exterior door trim, window surround, and roof rails.

The SEL model adds 19-inch Savannah aluminum-alloy wheels with wheel arch extensions and sport suspension; leather seating surfaces; memory driver’s seat; power folding door mirrors; and automatic headlights with rain-sensing wipers and auto-dimming mirror.

In profile, the Tiguan is distinguished by its raked-back windscreen, rising waistline, large side windows, and an unmistakable, trademark C-pillar at the rear. On SE and SEL trims, a distinctive ring of chrome around the side windows, coupled with black-painted window frames, works to visually enhance the car. The Tiguan’s design reflects its ability to conquer all weather conditions. The squared-off wheel arches feature plastic surrounds to protect the paintwork, while the short overhang at the front allows a 28-degree approach angle.

Power for the compact Volkswagen SUV is generated by the soul of the iconic Volkswagen GTI, a 2.0L turbo-charged four-cylinder prime mover that is bolted to a six-speed automatic with Tiptronic manual shifting, Sport mode, and Dynamic Shift Program (DSP). Available 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive models feature a Haldex center differential.

Mounted in a lightweight, one-piece aluminum subframe, the Tiguan’s strut-type front suspension has lower control arms and long-travel coil springs. At the rear, the robust four-link system was designed to cope with the rigors of off-roading and to accommodate the Tiguan’s available 4Motion all-wheel drive. So it is mounted in a high-strength steel subframe and features a broad lower control arm on each side, located by a trailing link, with the coil spring bearing directly on the trailing link and the damper on the wheel hub assembly. Among the benefits of this almost neutral layout is excellent straight-running stability on highly-uneven surfaces and reduced tire wear."
